Breeders of Paint horses consider membership in the APHA (American Paint Horse Association) a matter of great importance. Those who strive to be registered with this organization should know some rules and regulations, as well as being knowledgeable on the breed, its color patterns, and breed genetics. Though many horses can suit the color pattern of the Paint horse, they will not be registered until breeders prove their origin. The sire and the dam of a Painted horse should be registered with the APHA, the AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association), or the Jockey Club.

Paint Horses - Genetics
The issues of genetics should be well explored prior to breeding. Knowing color patterns of various types of the Paint horse and understanding the way genetics works will help breeders achieve better and, what is more important, predictable results. Experienced breeders know distinguishable traits of each type of the breed including the Tobiano, Overo, and Tovero horses. Yet, there are some divisions within these types. Thus, Overo horses can come in "frame over" color pattern, "sabino," "tobiano," and "splashed white" color pattern. Thus, the principles of breeding these types will also differ.
Paint Horses - Breeder's Certificate
Genetics is not the sole concern of Paint horse breeders. To register their foals, breeders should not only produce sound horses and prove their origin, but also undergo a procedure of getting necessary papers. The Breeder's Certificate is essential for registering Paint horses with the APHA.
