Appaloosa horse breeders will usually have photos of each available horse.
The basic color patterns of these horses are white over hips, with black or dark spots, white with black, red or different spots, black, with white snowflake spots, blue or red roan over entire body with varnish marks on face, more or less spots on body.

The majority of these horses keep changing their base color over the years, but keep the dark spots and grow some extra spots. Mostly changes occur during the first two years.
